Bricks Studio is the interior design studio of James van der Velden. Since 2010, we have created homes, restaurants, hotels and retail spaces across Europe, from Gstaad and Mallorca to London and Amsterdam. From the first sketch to the last vase on the table, we bring together old and new, collected objects and contemporary design, to create interiors with character and a story of their own. Our clients include citizenM, Thom Sweeney and Café Caron, and our work has been featured in The New York Times, Architectural Digest and Elle Decoration.
The studio
Timeless eclecticism.
Founded by James van der Velden in 2010, Bricks Studio creates interiors shaped by the people who use them and the buildings they inhabit. We work closely with our clients, from the first ideas and spatial plans through to sourcing, installation and the finishing touches. Our approach combines a clear sense of space with a collector’s eye for furniture, art and objects. Pieces are chosen for their character and how they work together, mixing periods, materials and textures to create places that feel personal, comfortable and full of life.

Questions clients ask us
What does Bricks Studio do?
Bricks Studio designs interiors for homes, restaurants, hotels and shops: from spatial plan and materials to bespoke pieces and styling. The studio works across Europe and was founded in 2010 by James van der Velden.
How does a project run?
A project starts with a first conversation with someone from Bricks, on site or online, followed by a sketch design. Then comes the final design with materials, colours, lighting and bespoke work, developed into drawings. During construction we stay involved for all design questions. Styling, from furniture to art, is the last step and often the most characteristic.
Do you manage the construction?
No. Construction is in the hands of the contractor or a project manager. Bricks Studio stays involved during the build for everything that touches the design: details, materials, colours and decisions on site, so the result matches the design.
Where do you work?
Across Europe. Recent projects are in Gstaad, on Mallorca and in the Netherlands; earlier the studio worked in London, Paris and New York for citizenM and Thom Sweeney, among others.
Discuss a project?
E-mail or call the studio. A first conversation is with someone from Bricks, on site or online, and without obligation.
